SUSTAINABILITY IS A RESPONSIBILITY THAT WE TAKE SERIOUSLY

We have built our business from the ground up to exceed the sustainability benchmarks of typical contract manufacturers.

THE PALM OIL PROBLEM

It is estimated that palm oil is used in almost 50% of all packaged goods but because it comes from a limited number of geographic locations, it has led to significant deforestation in those areas. Despite that, it remains an extremely popular and well-suited solution for many food and personal care products. Curbing our planet's use of palm oil is unlikely in the near future but there things we can do to make it more sustainable and reduce the environmental impact of it, especially on deforestation.

85%

of palm oil comes from Indonesia and Malaysia

9m

hectares in Indonesia are covered by palm oil plantations (that’s the size of the state of Maine)

160K

square miles of forest were lost to deforestation between 2004 and 2017

WHAT WE ARE DOING

Best Formulations has made a commitment to using, promoting and supporting sustainably grown and harvested palm oil. We are members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil and are working with our entire supply chain to ensure their use of palm oil is closely evaluated and puts the planet and people first. We endeavor to create products that simultaneously improve consumers lives while also protecting the future of our planet and global community.

RSPO

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil is an organization whose members have committed to produce, source and/or use sustainable palm oil certified by the RSPO. They only certify growers who commit to:

No deforestation

No new planting on peat

No use of fire

Protection of labor and human rights

Decent living wage

GREENER OPERATIONS

We have committed to achieving LEED certification which will make us the only Personal Care Contract Manufacturing facility on the West Coast with that designation.

LEED FACILITY

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a building certification program that includes a set of rating systems for design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings. It is globablly recognized as a symbol of sustainability achievement and leadership.

Reduce contribution to global climate change

Enhance individual human health

Protect and restore water resources

Protect and enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services

Promote sustainable and regenerative material cycles

OUR LEED GOALS

Our goals in achieving this designation are aligned with that of the U.S. Green Building Council. We hope to make a meaningful impact to the planet, our employees and our local community by operating our facility in a responsible and forward-looking manner.

OTHER WAYS WE ARE GOING GREEN

To deliver clean water back into the sewer system.

Our 3 stage, 4,500 gallon clarifier represents part of our commitment to being responsible caretakers of our water system – minimizing waste water through our efficient clean in place system, and clarifying any waste water we do produce.

Smart thermostats to maximize heating and air efficiency

While it may seem small, HVAC use by commercial buildings accounts for roughly 30% of their overall energy consumption. By using smarter scheduling and zone control, we can reduce that across our facility.

Electric car charging for employees and guests

We are installing electric charging stations for use by our employees and guests to encourage renewable energy based commutes and reduction in both fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions.

LED motion sensor lighting throughout facility

We are installing hundreds of motion activated LED lights throughout our facility to reduce energy use and prevent unnecessary lighting of unoccupied spaces.
